17. Iron Maiden- Piece of Mind(1983)- Rock/Metal Album Track Ranking

British heavy metal titans Iron Maiden return to my ranking/rating series with their fourth studio album, Piece of Mind, so here comes my ranking, as usual, starting with my least favourite song and finishing with the one I love the most:

9. Quest for Fire- 7(OK)
8. Sun and Steel- 7.5(Good)
7. Die with Your Boots on- 8.5(Very Good)
6. To Tame a Land- 9(Great)
5. Still Life- 9
4. Flight Of Icarus- 9.5(Fantastic)
3. Revelations- 9.5
2. Where Eagles Dare- 10(Stellar)
1. The Trooper- 10

 AVERAGE RATING- 8.88

There is no surprise regarding the winner- The Trooper is an absolute classic, a flawless track that doesn't need a chorus to active greatness- its galopant rhythm takes my mind on a journey to the battlefield, as this is just one of the history-inspired tunes Maiden have delivered throughout their long, spectacular career.
The second 10 for me, Where Eagles Dare, opens the album in a highly dynamic, energetic manner- a superb heavy metal tunes that doesn't drag for a single second of its six brlliant minutes.
The 3rd and 4th placed songs, Revelations and Flight Of Icarus, are also excelent. catchy, mesmerizing tunes; they slow down the pace a little, especially Revelations, a song which, just like The Trooper, shows that Iron Maiden are capable of creating mind-blowing songs even without a chorus. More greatness is achieved in the tracks ranked from 5 to 7 in my preference list, but there are also two less amazing tracks, which are not bad by any means, they're not just as exciting as the others, at least in my opinion.    Sun and Steel and Quest for Fire are tracks that I would never skip when listening to Piece of Mind, as they both have their strong moments.
With a respectabile average of 8.88, Piece of Mind has managed to beat the only Maiden I have ranked before, The Number of the Beast. which had an average rating of 8.62, but there are still plenty of outstanding Maiden albums that I have to rank, in the 80s as well as starting with the year 2000, when Bruce Dickinson returned to the band, but I'm quite sure that, after I finish ranking those albums, Piece of Mind will occupy a high position in my ranking of Iron Maiden records. I will always have a high regard for Piece of Mind, a remarkable album from a legendary heavy metal band!

Ranking Rock/Metal Albums: #3. Iron Maiden- The Number of the Beast(1982)

The mighty Iron Maiden makes its debut in Episode 3 of my series dedicated to rock and metal albums with 'The Number of the Beast', Bruce Dickinson's introduction to the band, so here is my ranking of the songs:

8. Invaders- 7(OK)
7. Gangland- 7
6. Run To The Hills- 8.5(very good)
5. The Number of the Beast- 9(great)
4. The Prisoner- 9
3. Children of the Damned- 9
2. 22 Acacia Avenue- 9.5(fantastic)
1. Hallowed Be Thy Name- 10(stellar)

OVERALL RATING: 8.62

'Hallowed Be Thy Name', a 7-minute long masterpiece with mind-blowing guitarwork and the fabulous voice of Bruce Dickinson impersonating a man who is meditating on his life as he  is about to be sent to the gallows, is simply Maiden at its finest hour and one of my favorite tunes of all time.
'22 Acacia Avenue' occupies the second place maybe because it's more complex and interesting than the two well-known singles of the album, the title track and 'Run To The Hills', while ' Children of the Damned', a slower, ballady, beautiful track, also managed to reach of my top 3 ahead of the aforementioned hits, which, along with 'The Prisoner', are obviously not bad either. On the contrary, they are catchy tunes with singalong choruses that also got high ratings from me.

There are, however, two tracks, 'Invaders' and 'Gangland', which I don't find bad, but which don't excite me either. It was quite hard for me to decide which one of these two tracks should take the last spot, but I finally chose 'Invaders' because I think it was a weaker chorus than 'Gangland'.

To summarise, 'The Number of the Beast' is definitely a classic Iron Maiden album, just like basically all their works from the 80s, and even if it has a couple of less impressive songs, I still enjoy it a lot and I frequently listen to it with great pleasure!

My Top 5 Iron Maiden Albums

5. FEAR OF THE DARK(1992)

I have to admit that there are a few weak tracks on this album, but there also some of my favorite tunes not only from the Iron Maiden discography, but from the entire spectrum of heavy metal: the majestic seven-minute anthem “Fear Of The Dark’’ and the amazing “Afraid To Shoot Strangers’’ with its incredible guitar solos, a true anti war song, are the best for me,but I also appreciate the fast and furious “Be Quick Or Be Dead” and even the ballad “Wasting Love’’, a moment of melancholy which can’t be found very often in their music.

4. POWERSLAVE(1984)

Maiden’s fifth studio album includes some truly outstanding songs, the best known being “Aces High’, a tune inspired by the heroism of British pilots in World War II, and “2 Minutes To Midnight’’, a very catchy and popular tune as well which deals with the everpresent threat of a nuclear disaster. There are also two complex and epic songs which make this album great:the title track, ”Powerslave”, and “Rime Of The Ancient Mariner’’, a 13-minute epic inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem with the same name, and some less known, but equally exciting tunes like "Flash of the Blade"; thanks to all of them "Powerslave" has became one of the many classic heavy metal albums from the 80s.

3. BRAVE NEW WORLD (2000)

The album which marked the return of charismatic front man Bruce Dickinson after a seven-year absence is a true masterpiece for me because it managed to have a modern sound and at the same time blend it with the traditional Maiden style to create an album which showed that the British rockers were not stuck in the glorious past, on the contrary, they were able to evolve. The highlights of this album are

the incredibly catchy “The Wicker Man’’, the science fiction-inspired tunes “Brave New World’’ and “Out of the Silent Planet’’ and the lengthy and progressive “Dream of Mirrors.’’

2. .PIECE OF MIND(1983)

Many people claim that Iron Maiden’s best decade was by far the eighties and after listening to the outstanding “Piece Of Mind’’ I can’t argue with them. The greatest song is undoubtedly “ The Trooper”, one of those essential Maiden anthems I could listen to many times without getting bored, followed closely by by “Revelations’’, a mid-tempo classic which sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it, particularly in these hard times we all have to deal with, and of course I can’t forget the remarkable “Flight Of Icarus”, a track which really makes me dream of flying.

1. THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST(1982)

It’s considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all times and it’s one of those albums which made me love heavy metal when I discovered it. Besides straight-forward metal anthems like the title track and “Run To The Hills’’, the first album made with Bruce Dickinson contains what I consider to be the best heavy metal song of all the times, the brilliant “Hallowed Be Thy Name’’ ,an extremely dramatic masterpiece which combines unbelievable musicianship with philosophical lyrics describing the mental torments of a man convicted to death by hanging.

My Listening Year in Metal Part 1: My Top 10 Most Played Bands of 2021

In darkness and light, in hope and negativity, in good and bad times rock and metal music has been my constant companion throughout 2021, as it has been for many years, so now it’s time to take a look back at my most played bands, albums and tracks of this year according to the stats provided by Last.FM. I have decided to split this article in 2 parts since it’s probably going to be a little longer than I initially intended.

PART 1 OF 2- MY TOP 10 MOST PLAYED BANDS OF 2021

1. Iron Maiden

2. Helloween

3. Sepultura

4. Overkill

5. Therion

6. Sodom

7.Ozzy Osbourne

8.Megadeth

9.Motorhead

10.Paradise Lost

Iron Maiden took the top spot by a large margin, and how could they not be this year’s winners after releasing this masterful piece of work called “Senjutsu”? In addition to that, I revisited the entire Maiden discography in December, listening to all their studio albums in chronological order because I have decided to post my ranking of their work, so it’s no they wonder they were the detached winners this year, followed by another legendary band, German power metal icons Helloween, which also delighted me in 2021 with their self-titled masterpiece, so it’s great to see that these bands still have a lot of energy and inspiration to create fantastic music.

Things get heavier in the next two positions, occupied by Sepultura and Overkill mostly because I have revisited their early material, without ignoring their last creations either. Anyway, in the case of Sepultura it’s no surprise that I still greatly enjoy their golden years, the period between 1987 and 1993, in which they had a fabulous streak of great albums. As for Overkill, there are two periods of their career I really dig, the former being the late 80s and early 90s, and the latter being the last decade, and especially their most recent creation, “Wings of War.” They never cease to amaze with their vitality after reaching a respectable age as well!

As for the rest of the top 10, Therion keeps symphonic metal in a high position thanks to their accessible last album, Sodom, which also released a pretty good album at the end of last year, represent my most listened to German thrash metal band of the moment, Ozzy is still in the top 10 mostly thanks to the first decade of his solo career, the 80s, Megadeth occupy an honorable 8th place mostly thanks to their classical period, from the 80s to mid-90s, but I expect them to aim at the top position next year if their new release meets my expectations, Motorhead, although not one of my favorite bands, reach the top 10 since in 2021 I decided to pay more attention to some of the albums in their vast discography which I have ignored in the past, and Gothic metal Paradise Lost add more diversity to this chart since they also have a lot of quality material to revisit from time to time.
